Global Connections: Into the Fold
Each year Corenet’s NYC chapter hosts a design competition as part of their annual dinner and fundraiser. Our firm was excited to be chosen as one of the finalists that would display our entry at the Intrepid. I organized an enthusiastic group of volunteers who collaborated on our submission which was based on the idea of Global Connections.
The Submission
The global landscape is a complex topography where proximity and adjacency are no longer driving factors. We are challenged to establish new ways to communicate across physical, cultural, and, ideological borders. We explore and unfold the endless possibilities of technology, mobility, diversity, and modularity to create a transformative architecture that connects us globally.
Our entry is founded on our understanding of the climate, cultures, context, and histories that informs the global narrative. Global connections ask to both simultaneously use and move beyond the standardized elements, to engage people by creating memorable spaces.
Our submission manipulates a flat surface into a complex shape creating connections between the mountains and valleys. Images of cities are printed on the flat surface, thus providing geographical references, but are then transformed when folded; a new physical presence is established. Advanced lighting technologies highlight selected connection points to emulate the milieus and principles that are central to humanity.
Ultimately, we look to create a multi-sensory approach where many hands have contributed to the final entry, thus reinforcing the idea of global connections and interconnectivity that exists between the people creating the product and within the product itself.
Collaboration
The team spent time each week studying the possibilities including concept, materials, display, lighting and submission entry package.
